Government considering to convert GSTN to a Government company
GST Network is a company handling the IT infrastructure of the new indirect tax regime.
As of now, private financial institutions are the majority owners in GSTN with 51 percent stake, while the centre and state governments together hold 49 percent of its stake.
The government is considering converting GST Network into a state-owned company. The government is now thinking to increase its stake in the company as the portal has been fully operationalised with stability in tax collection and implementation of e-way bill.
Initially it was incorporated it as a private company to allow adequate flexibility and freedom to GSTN and to ensure timely implementation of the IT infrastructure prior to the GST rollout.
